FAQs
Q: What does the SomnoSeal do?
SomnoSeal creates a comfortable seal between your lips and gums, preventing mouth breathing while you sleep. This keeps airflow — whether from natural breathing or a CPAP device — directed through the nasal passage, which is the optimal breathing route during sleep. The result: less dry mouth, reduced snoring, and better quality rest.
Q: How do I know if I need the Medium or Small SomnoSeal?
We recommend starting with the Starter Kit, which includes both Small and Medium sizes — the two most common fits. Because both mouth size and the degree to which your mouth opens during sleep affect the right fit, it's difficult to determine your size online. Try both sizes to find what works best for you, similar to how earbuds come with multiple tip sizes. Once you know your size, order the single-size refill pack.
Q: When will Large sizes be available again?
Large is used by approximately 10% of SomnoSeal users and is currently unavailable from our manufacturer. We hope to establish a new manufacturing partner later in 2026 and offer three sizes again. We appreciate your patience.
Q: Is SomnoSeal comfortable to wear all night?
SomnoSeal is made from soft, flexible biocompatible silicone and is designed to sit discreetly and snugly between the lips and gums. Most users find it comfortable throughout the night. It comes in multiple sizes to ensure a proper fit — no trimming required.
Q: I've tried a chinstrap and mouth tape with my CPAP to stop mouth breathing. How does SomnoSeal compare?
SomnoSeal is a less restrictive alternative to both chinstraps and mouth tape. Unlike chinstraps, it doesn't constrain jaw or chin movement. Unlike mouth tape, it doesn't seal your lips shut — it can be expelled with your tongue if needed, making it a safer option if nasal congestion occurs overnight.
SomnoSeal directly addresses mouth leaks without additional headgear, is compatible with facial hair, and doesn't cause skin irritation. Many CPAP users find it more comfortable and easier to use consistently.
Q: Can I use SomnoSeal with both nasal CPAP and oral appliance therapy at the same time?
Yes. SomnoSeal is compatible with both nasal CPAP devices and oral appliances, providing a comprehensive solution to mouth breathing during sleep.
There are two main types of dental appliances: mandibular advancement devices (MADs), which reposition the lower jaw to keep the airway open, and tongue-stabilizing devices (TSDs), which hold the tongue forward. SomnoSeal works alongside both types.
Q: Can the SomnoSeal be combined with a mouth guard?
Yes. SomnoSeal can easily be used alongside a mouth guard.
Q: Do you offer international shipping?
Yes, we ship internationally for an additional shipping and handling fee. Please note that once a package has left the United States, we are not responsible for lost, stolen, or delayed shipments, and international orders are not eligible for refunds related to missing or undelivered packages.
Q: The SomnoSeal just didn't work for me. Can I get a refund?
We recommend trying both sizes included in your Starter Kit, both with and without the "X" tape, before giving up. If it still isn't working for you, we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. See our full return policy for details.
Q: What is the SomnoSeal made of?
SomnoSeal is made from biocompatible silicone — soft, flexible, and safe for extended contact in the mouth. It comes in multiple sizes so there's no need to trim the device (which could create rough edges).
Q: Is SomnoSeal compatible with facial hair?
Yes. The SomnoSeal seals between your lips and gums — not against your skin — so facial hair has no effect on its performance.
Q: How often should I replace the SomnoSeal?
Replace your SomnoSeal after 90 days of use. This is based on testing of the biocompatible silicone material.
Q: How do I clean and maintain my SomnoSeal?
Wash the SomnoSeal with mild soap and warm water. Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain hygiene and extend the life of the device. The Starter Kit includes a drying stand that can be kept near your sink for easy air-drying.
Q: How do I properly insert and remove the SomnoSeal?
To insert, gently place the SomnoSeal between your lips and gums before sleep — it should stay in place on its own. If your mouth tends to open wide enough that it falls out, use the optional "X" tape for added security.
To remove, gently use the central tab with your fingers. You can also remove it hands-free by fully opening your mouth and pushing it out with your tongue.
Q: The SomnoSeal is causing me to drool. What should I do?
Any new device in your mouth will temporarily increase salivation and may cause some drooling. This typically improves over several days to a week as your mouth adjusts. Sleeping on your back may also help reduce drooling onto your pillow.
Q: Can I use SomnoSeal without a CPAP?
Yes. As long as you can comfortably breathe through your nose, you can use SomnoSeal without a CPAP to encourage nasal breathing during sleep.
Q: What do I do if I wake up and the SomnoSeal is no longer in my mouth?
Try using the "X" tape included in the Starter Kit to help keep the SomnoSeal securely in place throughout the night.
Q: Can I wear the SomnoSeal if I'm congested?
SomnoSeal is designed for people who can comfortably breathe through their nose during sleep. If your nose becomes blocked overnight, your body will instinctively open your mouth to breathe — and the SomnoSeal will either fall out on its own or can be easily pushed out with your tongue. It's intentionally designed to be expelled without using your hands, making it safer than mouth tape, which seals the lips shut.
If you already struggle to breathe through your nose at bedtime, we don't recommend using SomnoSeal or any nasal-only breathing device. It's best to address nasal congestion first — check with your provider if needed. If you use a nasal CPAP, the pressurized air can actually help keep nasal passages open overnight.
Q: What sleep issues does SomnoSeal help with?
SomnoSeal is beneficial for anyone whose sleep is affected by mouth breathing or dry mouth — not just people with sleep apnea. It's also commonly used by people who snore or experience dry mouth, sore throat, or disrupted sleep related to mouth breathing. By promoting nasal breathing, SomnoSeal can help improve overall sleep quality.
Q: Will SomnoSeal reduce or eliminate noisy mouth breathing?
Yes. By preventing mouth breathing, SomnoSeal can reduce or eliminate the noise associated with mouth-breathing and snoring — for a quieter sleep environment for both you and your partner.
Q: What are the benefits of SomnoSeal for dry mouth?
Nasal breathing is naturally humidifying. By encouraging it, SomnoSeal helps maintain moisture in the mouth and throat, preventing the dry mouth that commonly results from mouth breathing during sleep.
