New Safety Alert for Philips Dreamstation 2 CPAP users

New Safety Alert for Philips Dreamstation 2 CPAP users Hey Sleep Warrior. Just when we thought the CPAP drama was over…a new warning came out last month about the Dreamstation 2 CPAP machines. The Dreamstation 2 machines are new CPAP machines – at least within the past 3 years. In fact, they were often used as replacement machines for the Dreamstation 1 and older Respironics machines during the infamous RECALL of 2021.  Well, a few weeks ago, the FDA issued a critical safety warning to patients and healthcare providers about Philips DreamStation 2 CPAP machines. The warning came out after numerous reports of the devices overheating, posing potential hazards to users. Between August and November 2023, the FDA noted an alarming increase in reports of problems with these devices. More than 270 incidents have been reported, including fire, smoke, and other overheating issues Here’s what you should know:  If you're using a DreamStation 2, it's okay to use it; you just need to monitor your device closely.  The FDA advises: Place the CPAP machine on a firm, flat surface. Keep it away from carpet, fabric, and flammable materials. Regularly clean your machine and empty the water reservoir. Let the heater plate and water tank cool for about 15 minutes before removing them to avoid burns. What I recommend is that if you use the Dreamstation 2, just be aware of any overheating - this could show up as unusual smells or even strange sounds. If you notice any of these issues, stop using your machine and unplug it.  If you have experienced any of these issues, report your concerns about your machine to both the FDA and Philips - see the link below. And if you don’t feel safe using your machine, contact your sleep provider or medical equipment company for a replacement machine. The good news is that the FDA currently does not recommend discontinuing the use of these machines if you are not experiencing these issues. However, staying vigilant is key. And, the FDA is working with Philips to understand and resolve these issues. They are committed to updating the public with any new information as it becomes available. I hope this helps you navigate this important CPAP safety issue. Thanks for being here. I’ll see you next week.   https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/index.cfm?action=reporting.home

CPAP in Checked Luggage?

CPAP in Checked Luggage? Hey Sleep Warriors! Today’s Sleep Byte is for all you travelers out there. We're discussing a common, yet often controversial, topic: Should you pack your CPAP in your checked luggage or carry it on? Let's unpack this dilemma. The other day, I received a panicked message from a patient who was on vacation and the Airline lost their luggage – and you guessed it - with their CPAP machine packed inside. Ask any sleep professional about packing a CPAP in checked luggage, and you'll likely hear a resounding 'No'. But let's face it, not everyone who gives this advice has experienced the hassle of juggling an extra carry-on. Overhead bin space is at a premium, and carrying your CPAP as an additional item can be a real inconvenience. However, the key question here is: How would it impact your trip if you had to sleep without your CPAP?Before making your decision, consider these factors: If your trip is short, missing a night or two might not significantly impact your long-term health, though it could affect your comfort during the journey. Do you have your CPAP prescription with you? If so, and it's financially feasible, you could potentially purchase a new machine at your destination. Think about your activities while away. If you’re planning to drive long distances, the risk of increased sleepiness makes it wise not to gamble with losing your CPAP. Truth be told, most of the time, luggage arrives safely. Your CPAP, along with your other belongings, will likely reach your destination without any issues. But in worst-case scenarios, like my patient's, it can be quite distressing. Thankfully, we managed to send a prescription immediately to a national CPAP company, and they supplied a new machine within a week. It's reassuring to know there are solutions, but as the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure. In conclusion, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. It's about balancing convenience with the risk of being without your CPAP. So, weigh your options, make the best decision you can, and live with it. Thanks for being here, I’ll see you next week!

SomnoSeal Turns One: A Special Offer

SomnoSeal Turns One: A Special Offer Hey, Sleep Warrior! Today marks a very special occasion – the first anniversary of SomnoSeal! Today, I'll share with you my personal story and the inspiration behind creating this innovative device. The story of SomnoSeal began with a deep sense of frustration. As a sleep medicine provider, I was disheartened by the struggles of my mouth-breathing patients who desperately wanted to use CPAP but couldn’t tolerate full-face masks or chin straps. I’ll never forget the day a patient came to me, having strapped a Maxi pad over her mouth to prevent air leaks! That was the moment I knew something had to change. Driven by this need, I applied for a Biomedical Innovation grant from my university, OHSU, and was overjoyed to receive it in 2018. The journey from there was filled with collaboration, innovation, and perseverance – not to mention a pandemic! Working alongside skilled engineers, we experimented with various designs, ultimately opting for simplicity and functionality, which led to the creation of the SomnoSeal. We took feedback seriously, developed different sizes, and finally, launched it one year ago. The fact that SomnoSeal has not only survived but thrived in its first year is something that still amazes me. I was uncertain about a small business making its mark in the vast world of CPAP accessories. And, along this journey, I’ve also had the pleasure of collaborating with sleep dentists. I’ve learned from them about how the SomnoSeal helps with the tolerability of oral appliances, furthering the impact SomnoSeal has had on improving the lives of patients with sleep apnea.  As we celebrate this milestone, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each of you for being part of this incredible journey. In celebration of our first anniversary, we're offering a 15% discount on all SomnoSeal starter kits and refills for the entire month of December. It’s the perfect opportunity to stock up or introduce a fellow CPAP or oral appliance user to the benefits of SomnoSeal. Say goodbye to dry mouth and hello to nose breathing with the SomnoSeal.  Thank you for being with us on this journey. Your support and feedback have been the driving force behind SomnoSeal's success. Here's to many more years of improving sleep and health together. Use code: HOLIDAY to receive a 15% discount on your order at www.somnoseal.com Thanks for being here. I’ll see you next week.

Holiday Cheers and Sleep Fears

Holiday Cheers and Sleep Fears Hey Sleep Warriors, as we gear up for holiday festivities, it's crucial to talk about a common guest at these parties – alcohol. But don't worry, I've got both good news and bad news to share, along with some practical tips to keep your sleep apnea in check. Let's dive in. Alcohol and Sleep Apnea First, the not-so-great news. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant and can exacerbate sleep apnea symptoms. It relaxes your throat muscles, increasing the likelihood of apnea events. So, if you're indulging a bit more than usual this season, remember this effect. If you are using an oral appliance or suffer from snoring, you may also notice an increase in snores.    The Silver Lining: Auto-CPAP to the Rescue Now for the good news. If you are a CPAP-user, most modern CPAP machines are Auto-CPAPs, and they are quite smart. They adjust the pressure based on your needs. So, if your sleep apnea worsens temporarily due to that extra glass of spiked eggnog, your CPAP machine's got your back   Tracking Your Sleep Health Keep an eye on your CPAP data. You might notice a slight increase in residual AHI post-celebration or that your average pressure and peak pressures are a bit higher than usual. This is because of that increase in sleep apnea events I discussed earlier and your machine’s response. But remember, feeling groggy in the morning is likely more about the alcohol than your sleep apnea.    Your Top Holiday Sleep Tip Here's the most crucial tip: Always wear your CPAP! It's tempting to skip it after a festive night, but your CPAP is your best ally. It ensures you continue breathing smoothly, even if you've had a little too much cheer. Stay safe, Sleep Warrior, and enjoy the holidays responsibly.   Thanks for being here. I’ll see you next week!

Traveling with your CPAP this Holiday Season?

Traveling with your CPAP this Holiday Season? Hey Sleep Warrior,  As the holiday season unfolds, our thoughts often turn to gathering with family and friends, which usually means travel. Airports become a hive of activity, filled with the excitement and sometimes the stress of the season. But amidst the hustle and bustle, there's a silver lining: ensuring you get the quality sleep you need with your trusty CPAP machine. Notice how it's becoming a common sight? More and more travelers are moving through terminals with their CPAP machines. It's a testament to their dedication to good sleep, and whenever I spot them, I'm filled with a sense of pride. I want to run over and give them a high five for taking their sleep health seriously! And here's some good news for you CPAP users: the machine doesn't count as an extra piece of luggage. That's right, it's a medical device, so you can bring it along without affecting your baggage allowance, which means more room for those holiday extras. But travelers beware! In the sea of people, there's an ocean of CPAPs that could easily be mixed up in the holiday travel rush - why? because most CPAP carrying cases look alike.  So, to help you stand out from the crowd and keep your travel as smooth as your sleep, I've put together three important tips. These are the same suggestions I give my patients, ensuring their travels are nothing but restful. Tip #1Make your CPAP stand out by tagging it with something unmistakably you. Whether it's a colorful ribbon, a sticker, or a custom tag, this personal flair will ensure your CPAP never gets swapped or lost in the shuffle. This helps on conveyor belts and overhead bin space. It's a simple step for peace of mind. Tip #2Remember the extension cord – in hotel rooms and guest bedrooms, you never know how far the nearest outlet will be from your bed, and you'll want the CPAP setup to be hassle-free – I know how those first nights can be filled with late-night fun! An extension cord is a small addition to your luggage, but it's a big relief when you find that the plug isn't right by your bedside. Tip #3Arrange for distilled water – If you're staying with friends or family, ask them to pick up a jug of distilled water in advance. They're likely making a store run for your visit, and having it ready when you arrive will allow you to relax and catch up instead of running errands. In hotels or if distilled water isn't immediately available, using tap water temporarily is generally okay for short periods. It shouldn't harm your machine if it's just for a night or two. I wish you safe and smooth travels and may the airline computer systems be glitch free!  Thanks for being here. I’ll see you next week.

Daylight Savings and Your CPAP Clock

Daylight Savings and Your CPAP Clock Hey Sleep Warrior,  Daylight savings time rolls around twice a year, and along with it, questions about CPAP machine clocks. Do you need to update the time on your CPAP machine?  Let's set the record straight Daylight savings has come and gone, and I hope you've enjoyed the extra hour of sleep. But let's talk about your CPAP machine's clock and a little tip I share with my patients.  It's true  –  most CPAP machines don't automatically adjust for daylight savings. This leads many patients to wonder if they need to fiddle with their CPAP machine clock to adjust the time.  Here's the simple truth: don't sweat it While you could try changing the time zone to match the new time, you have to be very careful, since if you don't remove the data card first, you could reset your usage data.  What I tell my patients is simply this: The data will balance itself out. In the fall, it shows an extra hour, and in the spring, one less. So, keep calm and carry on with your CPAP therapy, and let’s not overcomplicate it. And here's a tip: Use daylight savings as a reminder to check your supplies. It's the perfect time to order new filters, masks, or other accessories you might need. So, enjoy the season and rest easy knowing that your sleep therapy is on track.  Thanks for being here. I’ll see you next week.
